Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, a civil rights activist and founding member of several musical groups including the Freedom Singers in 1962, has passed away at the age of 81. 

Toshi Reagon, who is her daughter, posted an announcement on social media detailing the life of her mother, who died on Tuesday. 

Reagon was born outside of Albany, Georgia in 1942 and later became involved in the Civil Rights Movement. In addition to co-founding the Freedom Singers she was a founding member of the Harambee Singers and Sweet Honey in the Rock. 

Reagon would lead Sweet Honey in the Rock until her retirement in 2003. 

She was also a scholar and served as Distinguished Professor in History at American University (AU) in Washington D.C.
