Brewer wins award

Glenn Sisk, AlaHA Awards Chair, presents Doug Brewer with the Distinguished Service Award.

Douglas L. Brewer, CEO of Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis, was given the Alabama Hospital Association's Distinguished Service Award during the Alabama Hospital Association's Annual Meeting on June 5.

The hospital association said Brewer was recognized for his career that was "defined by transformational leadership, unwavering commitment to rural healthcare and a record of service that has strengthened both his community and Alabama's hospital industry." Brewer announced earlier this month that he will be retiring this summer.

Since becoming CEO of Whitfield Regional Hospital in 2018, Brewer brought growth and innovation to the facility and expanded services, modernized facilities, strengthened its financial position and improved access to care throughout west Alabama. His efforts helped secure a sustainable funding source for the hospital, preserve critical healthcare services and position Whitfield Regional as a regional healthcare hub.

"Doug Brewer represents the very best of healthcare leadership," said Danne Howard, President and CEO of the Alabama Hospital Association. "He has demonstrated that great leaders do more than manage organizations; they strengthen communities, create opportunities, and solve difficult challenges. His vision and determination have improved healthcare access for countless Alabamians and helped secure a stronger future for rural healthcare."

Among Brewer's most significant contributions was his leadership in helping bring the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences to Demopolis. His advocacy and commitment were instrumental in securing support for a project that will prepare future generations of healthcare professionals and create new opportunities for students across rural Alabama.

Brewer has also been an advocate for healthcare beyond his own organization through service on the Alabama Hospital Association Board of Trustees, leadership roles within the Association, and extensive involvement in community and professional organizations.

"Doug's legacy can be seen in stronger healthcare services, a stronger hospital and a stronger community," Howard said. "He has consistently invested in the future of healthcare and is exceptionally deserving of this recognition."
