The AISA Class AA Region 2 Wilcox Wildcats may have put themselves back on track for a football state championship Friday night with a 15-12 road win over region opponent the South Choctaw Rebels.
In previous regional play, the Wildcats fell to Patrician Academy 40-0 but rebounded to defeat Jackson Academy 35-0. Friday night’s win put the Wildcats on the positive side of their regional record.
In Friday night’s game, Julian Curry rushed for 50 yards and two touchdowns, and J.J. Sessions kicked a 27-yard field goal for the Wildcats.
Also, for Wilcox Academy, Haas Terry rushed 19 yards on 2 carries; Lee Hollinger had 14 tackles; and Steele Swanner and Curry had nine tackles each.
“This was a huge region win. It was a defensive battle. We fought hard all night and fortunately we came out on top,” said Wilcox Academy head football coach Lebo Jones. He said he is, “Very proud of the boys!”
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in region play. They will have an open week this Friday and will host non-region opponent Clarke Prep on Oct. 3.
