Dexter Scott King, who was the youngest son of Martin Luther King Jr., has died at the age of 62 from prostate cancer.Â
According to media reports, King passed away at his home in California shortly before his 63rd birthday.Â
King took after his father's legacy in nonviolent activism and was also a animal welfare advocate, according to CNN.Â
He was named after Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery.Â
"The City of Montgomery is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Dexter Scott King, the son of our community's Civil Rights icon, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and Coretta Scott King" said a statement by city officials on social media.Â
"Dexter's commitment to continuing his father's work and advocating for justice and equality will always be remembered. May his spirit live on through the work of the King Center. Our thoughts and prayers are with him during this difficult time."Â
