There was plenty of fur and twisted metal littering the grass at Woody Clements Field Friday night after the Demopolis Tigers defeated the Holt Ironmen in a bruising game.
The Tigers left Holt with a 30-26 win, giving the Tigers a 2-2 season, 2-1 in regional play. It was also the Tigers’ 700th win.
Holt junior running back Antwone Long lived up to his reputation as one of the state’s best backs. But Demopolis brought freshman Aidan Burns, who generated 126 yards and three touchdowns. Jamaun Watts, Jordan Cherry and quarterback Whit Goodwin also had a good game. Â
There were no punts and no turnovers, so the back-and-forth game depended on stops and penalties. On defense Reshawn Robinson delivered seven tackles, including a game ender as Holt tried to overcome a 4-point deficit in the final minutes. Tigers Javonta Smith, Emonte Charleston and Will Compton saw lots of action.
As for penalties, there were plenty to go around. Untimely penalties stalled drives for both teams.
Demopolis Coach Dustin Goodwin told the team to be proud of themselves for fighting hard the entire game.
"You get knocked down no matter who it is you get back up," he told the team during the post-game huddle. "Enjoy (the win) and be ready to work on Monday."
The Demopolis Tigers will face the Thomasville Tigers at home next week.
