The Demopolis High School Tigers saw their hopes of making it to the playoffs wash away in a rain-soaked game against the Shelby High School Wildcats in Columbiana Oct. 9.

The final score of Shelby County 41 Demopolis 28 puts the Tigers out of the playoffs for the first time since 1995. And with a 2-5 record, the best the Tigers can hope for is a 5-5 season, even if they can win their last three games.

The next game will be especially challenging as the Tigers face the undefeated Selma High School Saints in Selma on Oct. 16.

The Tigers were unable to close out several promising offensive drives, and after a scoreless first quarter, Shelby County was able to exploit holes they found in the Demopolis line.

Shelby County led by 21-7 in the first half and then added another touchdown in the third quarter. But Demopolis responded with two unanswered touchdowns, putting the score 28-21 with a little over 10 minutes to play.

As the Hurricane Isaias-related rain fell harder in the fourth quarter, Shelby County drowned Demopolis’ hopes for a comeback with two scoring drives, one of which came from a Tigers fumble deep in Wildcat territory that Shelby County carried into the Demopolis end zone.

The efforts of Aidan Burns, Jordan Cherry, Malik Gray, Emonte Charleston, Jamaun Watts, Whit Goodwin, Braylen Wallace, Will Compton, Reshawn Robinson and others brought some ray of hope on a dreary night.
