The Morgan Academy Senators advanced to the final four of the AISA Class AAA basketball tournament with a wild 45-44 win over Valiant Cross at the Cramton Bowl Metroplex on Thursday.
The win came in the Elite 8 part of the tournament.
Rhyne Williams led the way for Morgan with 11 points. Andrew Thomas scored 8, Teddy Henry scored 7, Cink Minter scored 6, David Vardaman scored 5 and both Cole Wilson and Trey Jones scored 3.
“It was a scrappy game from start to finish,” said Morgan Academy head varsity boys basketball coach Matthew Allen. He said Valiant Cross took a 1-point lead late in the fourth quarter, “But we never got our heads down. Rhyne Williams hit a huge layup that put us up 1 and we were able to force them into a bad missed shot.”
The Senators will next play in the AISA Class AAA Final Four against Bessemer on Feb. 12 at the Metroplex in Montgomery at 2:30 p.m.
Allen said of the upcoming game, “We beat Bessemer early in the year, but they are very well coached and have improved tremendously. It’s going to be a tough contest and we are going to have to guard their shooters really well.
The Senators are 12-9 on the season.”
