The Morgan Academy varsity Senators baseball team improved to 4-0 in area play on Friday, March 11 winning both games of a doubleheader with shutouts on the road at Monroe.

The Senators’ Hayden Roberts threw a complete game, leading Morgan to a 14-0 victory over Monroe in game one.  In game two, Jack Moore and Davis Vardaman combined for a 15-0 shutout. 

In game one, the Senators got things started in the first inning when Andrew Thomas drove in one run on a double. 

The Senators added six runs in the fifth inning when Vardaman, C.J. Crocker, Barron Frazer, Hunter Sheehan, Clay Beers and John Allen Ingram each drove in runs.

Roberts got the win, going five innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out seven batters.

The losing pitcher for Monroe lasted two innings, allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out two and walking zero. The Monroe starting pitcher went three innings, allowing eight runs on ten hits and striking out three.

The Senators got 18 hits in the game with T.B. Clements, Thomas, Vardaman, Sheehan, Ingram and Frazer each managed multiple hits. Vardaman, Thomas and Clements each collected three hits.

The Senators also tore up the base paths, as three players stole at least two bases, with Clements leading the way with three.

In game two, Morgan’s two pitchers didn’t allow a single hit, and Moore induced a flyout for the last out of the game. 

The Senators secured the victory with nine runs in the third inning. The offensive onslaught was led by Cade Henderson, Ingram, Clements, Thomas, Vardaman and Frazer all knocking in runs.

The Senators put the pressure on with singles by Henderson, Ingram, Thomas, Vardaman and Matthew Hand, walk by Frazer, a fielder's choice by Henderson and a double by Clements.

On the mound for Morgan, Moore allowed zero hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out two and walking one. And Vardaman, who started the game, went two innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits and walking one.

The Senators got 11 hits in game two. Ingram, Vardaman and Thomas each had multiple hits. Thomas, Vardaman, and Ingram each collected two. The Senators were also sure handed and did not commit a single error in game two.

Morgan Academy head varsity baseball coach Stephen Clements said, “I’m proud of the guys. They are playing well and really working hard. Starting 4-0 in the area is huge, and we need to keep the momentum going.”
