Brenham shook off early turnovers and used a dominant second quarter to pull away for a 48-24 win over Montgomery Lake Creek on Friday night, moving the Cubettes to 3-3 in District 17-5A.
Brenham never trailed after an early 7-2 lead, but turnovers allowed the Lady Lions to rally 10-5 and tie the game at the end of the first quarter.
Senior forward Antyiahna Lang sparked the Cubettes early, scoring six of Brenham’s 12 first-quarter points and finishing with a team-high 14. She added eight points in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory.
The turning point came in the second quarter, when Brenham’s defense held Lake Creek scoreless for a 6:11 stretch. After being tied at 12, the Cubettes doubled up the Lady Lions at the basket and went on an 8-0 run to take a 24-16 halftime lead.
Junior guard Daliyah Richard kept pressure on Lake Creek in the first half, going 4-for-7 from the free-throw line and adding a 3-pointer as part of a nine-point night.
Brenham extended its advantage to 42-27 entering the fourth quarter, stretching the lead to as many as 17 points late in the period. Senior forward Sandra Prieto helped close out the win, scoring six of her nine points in the final frame, while senior guard Carmen McWilliams knocked down two 3-pointers.
Junior forward Janiyah Mathis added eight points — all in the second half — while Ja’Laya Pettus scored seven. Sophomore guard Bri’Ashia Broaden contributed four points and freshman guard Abygale Adams chipped in three.
Lake Creek’s lone offensive highlight came from Raegan Fowels, who scored 18 points — half of the Lady Lions’ total output.
The win marked Brenham’s first victory over Lake Creek since Jan. 2, 2024, and gave the Cubettes their first three-game district winning streak since that date.
With the result, Brenham remains in fourth place in District 17-5A, while Lake Creek falls to 1-5 in league play.
Brenham will remain on the road Tuesday, traveling to College Station — the district’s third-place team — for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff. The Cubettes lost the teams’ first meeting this season on Dec. 9, 45-38.
