HOUSTON - The No. 3 Brenham Cubs (2-0) did not just avoid a second-week letdown Thursday night. They dominated the gridiron against the Sterling Raiders (0-2).

Brenham defeated Sterling 49-8 on Thursday, earning a complete victory on the road while earning the chance to get an expanded roster on the field.

An early fumble from senior H-back Hagen Frank did not deter the Cubs. Brenham got the ball right back on a fumble created by a backward pass that was not pursued by a Sterling player.

Senior athlete and quarterback Xyran Upshaw finished off a four-play touchdown drive with a six-yard touchdown run to the right side, giving Brenham the opening seven points with 9:04 left in the first quarter.

Brenham’s defense turned its opening turnover into an omen for the rest of the game. The Cubs allowed just 16 yards in the first half. While Sterling’s Lucas Christopher gained 43 first-half yards on the ground, the rest of the Raiders lost 36 rushing yards in the opening half.

The Cubs also kept Sterling’s pass game in check in the first half, allowing just seven passing yards on nine completions.

Brenham’s defensive dominance opened the door for the Cubs to control the game offensively. The Cubs earned 225 first-half yards with an even split of passing and rushing attempts.

Sophomore running back CJ Glover was the big beneficiary in the first half, running for three touchdowns within 10 yards to highlight an eight-carry, 73-yard half.

Senior wide receiver Chis Guidry continued his march toward Brenham history with four receptions and 65 yards in the first half. His touchdown grab came with primarily one hand over the middle, capping off Brenham’s first-half scoring late in the second quarter and giving the Cubs a 35-0 halftime advantage.

Glover’s production was not limited to the first half. His first carry of the second half, and final carry of the game, produced a 15-yard touchdown run to the right side just over three minutes into the third quarter.

Junior running back Tre Taylor wrote his name onto the scoresheet with a 10-yard touchdown run to the left side with 5:51 left in the quarter.

Brenham’s second unit took the stage after Taylor’s touchdown, earning valuable gametime while continuing to assert the Cubs’ dominance against the Raiders.

Between the first drives from the first unit and the second unit’s performance, the Cubs allowed just 100 yards in the second half.

Offensively, Brenham earned 246 total yards. Taylor produced five carries for 33 yards and his touchdown to follow Glover’s effort.

This story will be updated with quotes from Glover and Brenham coach Danny Youngs.
