The NJCAA South District Quarterfinals saw both the men and women basketball teams of Wallace Community College Selma come to an end Tuesday night and Wednesday nights.
Tuesday, WCCS lady Patriots who finished third in conference play, lost 71-65 versus Wallace State who they had previously beaten during the regular season.
The lady Patriots were led in scoring by sophomore Jahmyah Pettway, who finished with 19 points and 4 rebounds.
Wallace State’s leading scoring was D. Garrett who finished with 20 points.
Lady Patriots Head Coach Herman Turner, stated “First, we are so proud of our Patriots on having a good season. We finished 3rd in the conference and made it to the quarter finals.” Turner said. When asked about his players, Coach added “We played hard and as a team. We got contributions from everyone with Jahmyah Pettway leading along with Deniyah McMillan. The young ladies fought to the end like warriors that they are. Hopefully, we can continue to build on our success this year. They represented WCCS and the community well.”
Patriots women’s basketball finished the season with an overall record of 8-16.
The men’s basketball team finished 17-9, ranked third in conference play, and also had to face Wallace State to advance.
WCCS came out pretty confident from a big win in their last meeting versus the Lions.
That confidence wouldn’t last long.
After a quick 10-2 lead in the first, the Patriots couldn’t sustain what was a tough, physical and what seemed to be a personal game from the up-the-road rival.
Final score was Lions 64, Patriots 55.
Patriots Head Coach Duane Evans stated, “Although being a little short handed with all of our players, I'm really proud of our guys this year! We lost to a great team that made shots on the big stage. Our guys executed the game plan well just fail short on making shots on the wrong night. Very sorry to disappoint Patriots nation but we're looking forward to working with our freshman that are coming back and the upcoming recruiting class next for next year!”
The Patriots were led in scoring by sophomore Rodney Battle from Columbus, Georgia, who finished with 17 points and 6 rebounds.
