The City of Selma Wednesday announced plans for the future of broadband access in Selma and the surrounding areas.

Selma Mayor Darrio Melton announced the deployment of 1G wireless internet throughout the entire city.

“Residents and businesses will now be able to receive high-speed internet services from the city,” he said. “It is an opportunity to create a sustainable broadband utility and to expand economic development for the city.”

In addition, other parts of the county will benefit from this expansion of high-speed broadband WiFi, according to the mayor.

He said Orrville is one of several areas in Dallas County that will benefit from Selma’s leadership in the broadband space.

Melton said, “Here in Selma we are leading the way for West Central Alabama and look forward to working with the state and federal government to strengthen and expand this initiative throughout the entire region.”

He continued, “As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is a mandate for the City of Selma to provide local residents broadband internet access.”

According to the mayor, this announcement of expanding the digital footprint through high speed broadband WiFi is the latest of many technological advances taking place in historic Selma.

Currently, Selma is the only city in Alabama that owns its broadband facility. This is something that is unique for a city in Alabama. Selma is known for its role in the Civil Rights Movement.

Melton reports his vision is to move Selma boldly into the 21st century, which means highlighting Selma as a city of historical significance and innovation.
