CVS Pharmacy is closing its Demopolis store in August.
According to a sign on CVS doors, the store on Highway 80 will close on Aug. 15. The store says its closest stores after the closure will be in Greensboro and Selma.
CVS spokeswoman Amy Thibault said it was a "difficult decision" to close the CVS Pharmacy at 312 Highway 80 East in Demopolis and employees are being offered comparable roles within the company.
"All prescriptions will be transferred to the CVS Pharmacy at 675 Tuscaloosa Street in nearby Greensboro to ensure patients have uninterrupted access to pharmacy care," Thibault said. Patients can also choose to fill their prescriptions at any CVS Pharmacy, or the pharmacy of their choice, she added.
"Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store closure decisions," she said in a statement. "Other factors include local market dynamics, population shifts, a community’s store density, and ensuring there are other geographic access points to meet the needs of the community."Â
CVS, which is the nation's largest pharmacy chain, closed 244 stores between 2018 and 2020 and, in 2021, closed another 900 stores. Earlier this year, CVS closed a number of their 1,800 locations in Target stores.
It is not the only pharmacy chain struggling. Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy last year and will close up to 500 stores.
Many credit the rise of Dollar General stores in rural areas for hurting business at pharmacy box stores.
