A nine-year-old girl in Selma was injured in a shootout that took place at Chanticleer Apartments on Saturday morning.
According to WAKA, the girl's family took cover during a shooting that occurred nearby. Afterwards her mother, Lacamian Russell, found her with gunshot injuries.
She was then transported to a hospital in Birmingham and has been released.
So far no suspects have been arrested as the investigation continues.
Selma City Schools posted a statement on social media offering counseling and support to students and staff at the child's school, Sophia P. Kingston Elementary.
“The Selma City School District is relieved to report that a 9-year-old student who was shot last weekend is currently recovering,” Dr. David Scott said in a statement. “While we celebrate the child's survival, the district is aware of the ongoing impact this event has on our students, staff, and the local community.”
Selma police are investigating the shooting that happened at Chanticleer apartments early Saturday morning and no arrests have been made, according to WAKA. The agency said the child was treated at a Birmingham hospital and released.
Scott said the district will offer counseling and additional resources for “any emotional and psychological needs that may arise when the student returns to school.”
Scott said the incident highlights the need for more dialogue about safety and encouraged families use sensitivity when discussing it with students.
“As we move forward, we remain dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for all students,” Scott said. “The district will continue to work closely with local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.”
