The Demopolis City Council unanimously voted to give $150,000 to the Demopolis City School athletic department.

Athletic Director Mark Heaton presented invoices for weight and exercise equipment that will be used by male and female athletes at the high school and middle school. He said the school system will also use the city’s contribution to purchase $50,000 worth of band equipment.

Councilman Hugh Overmeyer, who suggested the contribution to the school system at the last city council meeting, said that money will “have an immediate impact.” He noted that the school system has recently spent money on improving schools, which he said “has not been the case in the last five or 10 years.”

“If the school was still piling up money, I would not be for this,” Overmyer said of the contribution.
