T’Ashia Horton has received the first Alice Martin West Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of a well-known Selma civil rights activist.

Horton, a senior at Selma High School, was chosen based on her 500-word essay entry about a struggle in life that she had to overcome and need. Horton will be attending Alabama A&M University in the fall as she will be pursuing a degree in nursing.

West’s family announced the first winner of the scholarship, saying they are “elated to present the first annual Alice Martin West Memorial Scholarship in honor of our ‘Big Mama,’ Alice Martin West.”

West was known for opening her home and heart to leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, including Dr. Martin Luther King.

“We miss her dearly, but through each of us her legacy will live on,” the family said.
