Selma High’s gym was packed on Monday with school supplies, barbers, games and pizza for the Selma City Schools’ annual “Operation Help Our Scholars” back to school event.
About 200 students and their parents lined up for new backpacks and uniforms given out by partners including Selma Police Department and the Hawthorne, Atchison & Riddle law firm.
Moments to Memories’ Twanya Dixon painted faces while barbers from three area barbershops - TJ Cutz, Cleopatra Beauty and Golden Ladies Salon - gave the boys haircuts.
Attendees could meet Selma’s new Superintendent David Scott or catch up with returned Selma High Principal Stoney Pritchett, who said it was great to host an event to ensure students have what they need before school starts.
Pritchett also described what the first day of school at Selma High will look like on Aug. 11. “It’s going to be fun with laughter and I’m going to be welcoming them back and shaking their hands and cheering them on,” he said, adding “there’s going to be a parade at Selma High.”
Selma High teachers met for a team building trip at the 4-H Club in Columbiana on Monday, and Pritchett said they left “excited” for the school year.
