R.C. Hatch High has a new principal for the 2023-2024 school year.
Perry County Schools announced the addition of Boris Hurst as Principal of R.C. Hatch High School.
In a Facebook post, the district says Hurst, a Tuscaloosa native, graduated from Overton High School in Memphis and served in the US Army Reserves for several years while pursuing a Bachelor of Science from Alabama A&M University. Hurst earned a Master of Education degree from Cambridge University and an Educational Specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University. He also taught with Atlanta Public Schools at Archer High School and Booker T. Washington High School.
Hurst pursued an administrative career in education and served as assistant principal and later as principal of George Washington, Carver High School, and D.M. Therrell High School.
While serving as principal of The School of Business and Entrepreneurship at the Therrell Educational Complex, Hurst implemented the Senior Seminar Series, which equipped students for college readiness through the application process for colleges and scholarships, college tours, S.A.T. prep sessions, and college mentors.
Eleven Alive News featured a story for the "Beat the Odds Award" which highlighted Hurst and a student. He has also been a presenter at the High Schools That Work Conference.
In addition to his school accomplishments, Hurst has been recognized by Who's Who Among American Educators and is a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
In 2010, Hurst led a new Single-Gender High School, B.E.S.T. Academy High School at Benjamin S. Carson is Atlanta Public Schools' first all-male high school. In 2014, Hurst took on an opportunity as Center Manager/Director of the Head Start and Pre-K program in Jefferson County.
In 2020, Hurst opened his business, Hurst Enterprises/The Barbershop on Skyland in Tuscaloosa. In addition, he was a candidate for the City Council in his hometown of Tuscaloosa. With a desire to return to public education, Hurst joined Montgomery Public Schools from 2021 to 2023 as lead career technology teacher and summer school principal.
In July 2023, Hurst accepted and became the principal at Robert C. Hatch High School in Uniontown.
