Selma police department's former assistant chief Natasha Fowlkes has joined Selma City Schools as the third School Resource Officer.
The city school system made the announcement on social media that Fowlkes is taking the last of three positions for resource officers that have been hired to help monitor and keep the schools safe.
Fowlkes resigned on July 2 from her job as assistant chief of Selma police after being on leave for a month during an investigation of possible wrongdoing. Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. in a statement said she was cleared of the allegations that caused her to be put on leave.
Selma City Schools said they hired her because of her "distinguished career in local law enforcement spanning nearly 20 years" that included serving as the first African American Assistant Chief of the Selma Police Department.
"Let's extend our warmest welcome to Mrs. Fowlkes and look forward to her dedicated service in ensuring the safety and security of our scholars, teachers, principals, and staff members," the district said.
