Selma City Schools honored Payne Elementary School of STEAM Excellence’s Principal Tamera Carter as part of National Principals Month in October.

Carter was recognized along with Krystal Dozier of Edgewood Elementary and Dr. Valerie Ashmon-Lewis of Clark Elementary.

When choosing Carter, Payne’s principal for five years, Selma City Schools said, “She is the cornerstone of her campus, providing leadership that shapes the school environment and contributes to the overall success of both students and staff.”

Shareka Benjamin, a parent to two Payne Elementary students, says “I wanted my children with her.” The two women also have a long history of community and friendship together. “I trust her judgment with my kids. I don't want them at any other school. That's why I'm not going to send them anywhere else. … If she moves schools, I'm moving with her.”

Payne Elementary said in a statement, “Today we celebrate one of the most caring, dedicated, and inspiring principals in the state of Alabama - Mrs. Tamera Carter, Principal of Payne Elementary STEAM Academy!”

“Under her leadership, Payne has become one of the safest and most nurturing schools where every child, parent, and family feels valued, supported, and loved,” the school said in a statement. “Carter leads with integrity, compassion, and fairness, treating every faculty member, staff, scholar, and parent equally while ensuring that excellence is the standard for all.”

Selma City Schools said, “She often reminds us: ‘I believe in the success of every scholar. With high expectations, meaningful relationships, and the right support, all students can achieve excellence and thrive – no exceptions.’”

Carter is an advocate for safety and inclusion inside of the school environment. She welcomes students at the school's front door every morning, she hones in on their emotional health by asking them how they are and encourages them to smile, because “it’s the best positive way to start the day.” And she celebrates the small wins.

Carter's track record in the education system reflects one of positive turnovers in testing for her students and her determination to make Payne Elementary a certifiably adept STEAM elementary school.
