Selma High School and Saints Virtual Academy/Alternative School will resume their regular schedule Tuesday, April 30, Selma City School officials announced Monday afternoon.

Selma City Schools put Selma High, Saints Virtual Academy and the alternative school on virtual classes for Monday after the shooting of a student over the weekend led to multiple shootings in the community.

“We have received assurances from the Selma Police Department of increased police presence at both campuses for the remainder of the year,” Selma School Superintendent Zickeyous Byrd said in a statement Monday. “Please rest assured that the safety and security of our scholars and employees remain our top priority.”

Selma school officials announced on Sunday that the campuses would not meet in person on Monday at the recommendation of local law enforcement “due to multiple shootings over the weekend involving juveniles, including one that left a teen seriously injured.”

“This decision comes out of concerns of possible retaliation,” the Sunday statement said. “Our mission is to keep our scholars and staff safe at all times. Currently, local law enforcement is now investigating the incidents. No arrests have been made at this time.”

The student who was shot has not been officially identified but those close to the family say he is in stable condition.
