The Selma City School Board on Tuesday voted 3-1 for the newly built School of Discovery to serve fifth and sixth graders.
The decision to put fifth and sixth grades in the new school on Washington Street was recommended by Superintendent David Scott. Scott will hire a new principal for this intermediate school in January, the school district said in an announcement.
Scott also proposed that all elementary schools in the district transition to serving grades K through four.
"We encourage parents and community stakeholders to stay tuned for the announcement of an important town hall meeting," the district said. "This is your opportunity to voice your ideas and contribute to shaping the curriculum design and layout of the innovative new school."
Officials broke ground on the $17 million in February 2024.
