The Coalition of Concerned Families in Selma held a Candidates’ Forum on April 2 for the 2026 Sheriff of Dallas County election.
The forum was held inside of the Foot Soldiers Park auditorium on Water Avenue and featured candidates Willie Calhoun Jr. and Dewayne Sanders.
Jasmine Pritchett, Vice-President of the Coalition of Concerned Families, served as moderator of the forum along with CCF President Angela Benjamin.
Willie Calhoun Jr., who is also running, also has over 20 years of experience in law enforcement. He was named national officer of the year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2022 presented by Selma Post 3016.
On Jan. 19, Dewayne Sanders made an official public address from his social media account, stating that he was running and listing his experience as a Sheriff Deputy in the county for 20 years of experience with various responsibilities in law enforcement.
Two candidates for Dallas County sheriff shared their priorities and backgrounds during a recent candidate forum, emphasizing community partnerships and proactive policing.
Candidate Calhoun told the audience he is the only contender still actively working in law enforcement. A Selma native, he highlighted his experience with the Alabama Drug Enforcement Task Force and said he wants to continue serving and protecting the community he has called home all his life.
Candidate Dewayne Sanders also spoke about his long connection to Dallas County. After retiring from law enforcement, Sanders said working part time with the Selma Police Department’s code enforcement division in 2025 inspired him to return to public safety and run for sheriff in 2026.
During the forum, moderated by Jasmine Pritchett, both candidates answered questions about public safety strategies, youth violence, and the role of the sheriff’s office. Calhoun emphasized proactive policing and having “boots on the ground” in neighborhoods while working closely with local agencies.
Sanders highlighted building stronger relationships between law enforcement and the community, saying empathy and trust are key to preventing and responding to violence.
Audience members also asked about the long-standing closure of the Dallas County Jail. Both candidates noted the jail is ultimately a county issue but said they would work with county leaders to help find solutions.
Throughout the forum, both candidates stressed cooperation among law enforcement agencies and the importance of community involvement in improving public safety across Dallas County.
