Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump took Alabama’s nine electoral votes on Tuesday.
The Associated Press called the state for Trump as soon as polls closed at 7 p.m. As of 9:28 p.m., with 44% reporting, Trump had 714,257 votes (68%) in unofficial returns while Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris had 320,912 (30.6%)
Alabama last voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 1976, and the state has not been a battleground since 1980. Trump got 62% of the state vote in 2016 and 2020.
Trump appeared at a University of Alabama football game in September but delivered no speeches there, and did not do any traditional campaigning in the state during the general election. Trump’s last speech in Alabama was at an Alabama Republican Party fundraising dinner in August 2023.
Harris did no campaigning in Alabama as a presidential candidate. She spoke at Selma’s Bridge Crossing Jubilee in March, when she was the Democrats’ presumptive vice presidential nominee.
