Albert Turner Jr.

The Alabama Democratic Party Executive Committee called for a recount of the May 19 primary in Perry County, but the local party said today that Turner will have to put up $8,500 to cover the cost of the recount.

Perry County Commissioner Albert Turner Jr. will have to pay $8,500 to cover the cost of a vote recount ordered by the Alabama Democratic Party, Perry County Democratic Party Chairman Carlton Hogue said Tuesday.

Turner lost reelection to his District 1 seat to challenger Donald Bennett Sr. by one vote in the May 19 Democratic Party primary. Turner argued before the State Democratic Executive Committee in Montgomery on June 15 that the race was either tied or should be overturned because of what he called voting irregularities.

The state party executive committee called for a recount, but Hogue said Tuesday that the Perry County Democratic Party is drafting a letter informing Turner that he will have to put up $8,500 to cover the cost of the recount.

Turner will have 48 hours after he receives the letter to put up the money, Hogue said after a meeting of the Perry County Democratic Committee in Marion Tuesday.
