The Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth, and Reconciliation, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is pleased to announce that it is accepting proposals from licensed, registered architects to support the rehabilitation of the Historic Sullivan Building.
The ideal Architect will be a methodical, innovative, and collaborative professional with a passion and knowledge of preserving historical buildings and structures; the Architect will ideally have experience and/or an interest in Civil Rights Movement history, given the values of this project and the Sullivan Building’s connection with the Voting Rights Movement, in relation to Selma, AL, Montgomery, AL, and the broader Alabama Black Belt.
The Sullivan Building, on the corner of Franklin Street and Alabama Avenue, is a key commercial and professional landmark in Selma.
The project is squarely focused on mitigating threats that have compromised the integrity of the building’s interior for decades.
The Architect will be responsible for working with the Project Manager and General Contractor (GC). The Architect’s additional responsibilities will include:
- Completing an initial, basic schematic within the first month of the contract to fit to
current code, given the potential uses of the building;
- Serving as the primary Architect on the project, with all relevant duties; and
- Supporting the Community Input process on the project for Selma residents, led by the SCNTR Project Manager.
Complete proposals must be submitted to the SCNTR by email on or before June 30, 2025 at 11:59 pm CST. All materials must be received by 11:59 p.m. CST, late proposals may not be considered. Proposals are to be clearly marked with the subject line "ARCHITECT PROPOSAL - SCNTR SULLIVAN PROJECT”. Please submit all materials to: LChatmon@SelmaCNTR.org
All proposals must include:
- Cover letter and introduction including the name of the firm or individual and the name and telephone numbers of the person(s) authorized to represent the company regarding all matters related to the proposals. Architects must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Historic Preservation Professional Qualification Standards (Federal Register, June 20, 1997) for historic preservation (see https://bit.ly/nps-
- Affirm the Architect’s ability to work with the GC and Project Manager, in an Integrated Project Deliveryfashion, to meet the project timeline as stated previously under PROJECT SCHEDULE. Note any anticipatedchanges that would require modifying the schedule.
- Proposed Scope of Work, including a description of the Architect’s plan, approach,, and resources to be used in completing the project. Indicate what of the work the Architect will personally do, and what will be done by subcontractors (or if necessary to note, what work will be done by the GC).
- Detailed budget, including a quote for the overall cost, broken down by elements of the project, as listed in the Scope of Work section above.
- Proposed project timeline and estimated completion date.
- Resumes of key personnel to be completing the project.
- List of references and contact names for comparable projects.
Proposals in response to this RFP will be valid for sixty (60) days from the proposal due date. The SCNTR reserves the right to ask for an extension of time if needed.
The SCNTR will notify in writing the person or persons authorized to represent the applicant if they were or were not selected.
All materials submitted in response to the RFP become the property of the SCNTR and supporting materials will not be returned. The SCNTR is not responsible for any costs incurred by the proposer in the preparation of the proposal.
Notwithstanding any other provisions of the RFP, the SCNTR reserves the right to reject any or all proposals, to waive any irregularity in a proposal, and to accept or reject any item or a combination of items, when to do so would be to the advantage of the SCNTR. It is further within the right of the SCNTR to reject proposals that do not contain all elements and information requested in this document. The SCNTR shall not be liable for any losses incurred by any responders throughout this process.
