The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) will host an “in person" Cottage Food Safety Training in Selma on Feb. 9.
The training will take place at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library’s Vaughan room located downtown at 1103 Selma Ave. from 1–3:30 p.m. and will help participants gain a better understanding of the current cottage food law and the requirements to stay in compliance. This face-to-face training will also provide the opportunity to interact with and learn from our local food safety Extension agent, Alice Moore.Â
The current law on cottage foods was revised in 2021 and considers cottage food as a non-potentially hazardous food that has been prepared in a person’s home and that does not require time or temperature control for safety. The Feb. 9 training was developed for those who would like to learn more about selling these non potentially hazardous food items produced in their homes and to provide them the opportunity to earn the needed certification for compliance. Topics that will be covered are designed to help attendees better understand where cottage food items can be sold, recognize product labeling requirements, and reinforce basic food safety practices.Â
Pre-registration for the training is required. There is also a $25 registration fee required to participate. Those who would like to attend can register online at www.aces.edu/go/cottagelawbusiness or call 334-216-0738 for more information. For details about this and other educational resources available through Alabama Cooperative Extension, please contact the Dallas County office at 334-875-3200 or visit www. ACES.edu. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (Alabama A&M & Auburn Universities) is an equal opportunity educator and employer. Everyone is welcome! If you need a reasonable accommodation or language access services, contact Alice Moore at amm0167@aces.edu.
