Kelly Clarkson fought back tears after singer and actress Rita Wilson showered her with compliments.
Wilson was a guest on Wednesday’s (May 27) edition of The Kelly Clarkson Show, where she was promoting her new album and accompanying tour, Sound of a Woman. Towards the end of the interview, Wilson thanked the American Idol winner for the past seven years of hosting her daytime talk show.
“I just wanna say one thing before we go,” Wilson said. “I wanna thank you for the years that you’ve been doing your show. I wanna thank you for literally changing the game when it came to daytime television.”
She continued, “The fact that you love music. That you have brought so much music to daytime, that you have shared with us your voice, your gifts, and everyone else’s and your incredible band. I really wanna thank you because it has made a big change in my life. So thank you, Kelly.”
As the studio audience cheered in support of Wilson’s words, Clarkson began to tear up. “I’m fine,” she said as she became teary-eyed.
After hugging Wilson and returning to her seat, Clarkson tried to compose herself. “Oh my God!” she joked, “I’m like, ‘Shut it off!’ It’s okay.”
Clarkson announced back in February that her talk show would end after this current season. In a statement, she explained how she wants to “prioritize” her children following the passing of their father, her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, who died in August 2025 at 48. Final episodes are expected to broadcast in the fall.
“I am forever grateful and honored to have worked alongside the greatest band and crew you could hope for, all the talent and inspiring people who have shared their time and lives with us, all the fans who have supported our show, and to NBC for always being such a supportive and incredible partner,” the singer wrote at the time.
She added, “Because of all of that, this was not an easy decision, but this season will be my last hosting The Kelly Clarkson Show. Stepping away from the daily schedule will allow me to prioritize my kids, which feels necessary and right for this next chapter of our lives.”
