Will Trent is one of the most exciting crime dramas on all of television right now, let alone broadcast, as it follows the title character through wild case investigations that very often hit way too close to home.

In Season 4, Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) had to confront his personal demons and tragic history, tormented by the return of serial killer James Ulster (Greg Germann) in both body and spirit. The season also gave him a new sense of family as his biological father, Caleb (Yul Vazquez), became a part of his life, and his Uncle Antonio (John Ortiz) also returned in a big way… and had to be rescued from the serial killer copycat of Ulster’s daughter! At the same time, it was also a costly season. Amanda (Sonja Sohn) was murdered by Antonio’s abductor, and while en route to have her baby with Dr. Seth (Scott Foley), Angie (Erika Christensen) was involved in a car crash that cost her husband’s live.

Suffice it to say, the season was a doozy, and fans might be left to wonder what’s still in store after this. Here’s what we know so far about Will Trent Season 5.

Is Will Trent renewed for Season 5?

Yes! ABC renewed the show for a fifth season. This renewal is not a surprise, as based on ratings, Season 4 averaged almost 5 million linear viewers per episode and a .30 rating in the key audience demographic.

Who will star in Will Trent Season 5?

Barring any more tragedies, the current principal cast will likely return: Ramón Rodríguez as Will Trent, Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, Kevin Frazier as Franklin Wilks, and Bluebell as Betty Maria White Trent. The series’ supporting cast also includes Cora Lu Tran as Nico.

Fans can also expect a new character to join the fold to take over as deputy director of the GBI. Karine Rosenthal confirmed to TV Insider that while it seemed like the show was setting up for Appleyard to take over the job, he is just a “placeholder,” and a new person will earn that job.

Sonja Sohn‘s character, Amanda Wagner, was shockingly killed off in Season 4; however, she could return in flashbacks or ghostly apparitions like some of the other characters in Will’s life. As Liz Heldens told Variety, “That’s always a little of a comfort that we have a mechanism by which we could bring people back if Will needs to work something out.” The same is true for Scott Foley’s Dr. Seth. The producers have cast doubt, however, on the possibility of Greg Germann returning as the apparition version of James Ulster again in Season 5, with Heldens telling TV Insider, “it feels like we’re going to leave that in the past.”

When will Will Trent Season 5 premiere?

A premiere date has not yet been announced for Season 5, but it is expected the show will be a midseason premiere for January or February 2027, when it returns.

What will happen in Will Trent Season 5?

The deaths of Amanda Wagner and Dr. Seth in Season 4 will loom large for the characters. As coshowrunner Karine Rosenthal told Variety, “Amanda has been the character who has protected Will for as long as she has known him. So this gives us the opportunity for a completely new dynamic in the GBI, because her replacement will not have that same relationship with Will. Her death had the most impact on the most amount of characters. It really sets everybody reeling from this enormous loss. So it’s such a reset for our characters in a way that is painful but exciting for Season 5.” However, don’t expect the trauma of losing her husband to bear down on Angie too much more; Heldens told TV Insider, “What I hope sticks with her is the experience and the maturity that she gained from being in a relationship that was functioning.” Rosenthal also indicating that we will be seeing more of Will and Angie together in Season 5 as he serves as a sort of “co-parent” to Angie and Seth’s daughter Edie.
