Dr. Glenn McPhillips, a retired podiatric surgery specialist in Selma and the Selma Art Guild featured artist for October and November, enjoyed a well-attended art show and reception at the SAG Gallery on Oct. 12.

The reception featured Halloween candy and trick or treat bags that attendees used to trick or treat around the gallery while viewing Dr. McPhillips’ works.

Cam Walker Guarino, SAG president, said the faces of those who attended the gallery “lit up when they were given their trick or treat bags for candy and to see McPhillips’ works.”

McPhillips said, “I was very pleased with the turnout and how well my different styles of painting were received.”

McPhillips was born in Elkins Park, Pa. He attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science for his bachelor’s degree, then New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York City and back to Philadelphia, Pa. for his residency.

He and his wife, Dr. Tomeko McPhillips, also a podiatrist, now make their home in Collirene, Ala. She still practices at Rual Health Medical.

“I have always loved art and have collected numerous paintings and other pieces,” McPhillips said. “I had always wanted to be able to paint or be creative with arts and crafts… but didn’t think I was artistic.”

McPhillips experimented with the different mediums (oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media) and styles of painting.

He said, “My Art Philosophy is that there are no rules when it comes to creating art. Since I had no formal training, I was able to ‘break’ all the rules. I found along the way that I really liked what I created most of the time. It was an experiment most of the time to see what processes worked for me and what didn’t.”

He said, “Having my own art show at the Guild (SAG) is like being in one of my ‘dreamy’ paintings… because I couldn’t have ever imagined that I would be here… it’s a dream.”

Guarino said the McPhillips’ show will remain up for view through the end of November and can be viewed Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The Selma Art Guild was founded in the 1970s to provide opportunities for Selma area artists and to promote their work.
