The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) has awarded $2 million to local communities cut energy use costs.

Under the State Energy Program funds will be used to replace outdated heating, cooling and lighting systems with ones that are "more modern and efficient" that could save money.

“It just makes good sense to conserve funds by converting to more energy efficient heating, cooling and lighting equipment,” Gov. Kay Ivey said. “I applaud these schools, local governments and other organizations who are investing in modern equipment and techniques to ensure that they are spending wisely.”

Of the communities to benefit from the grant is the Dallas County Board of Education, which is set to receive $240,000 to install energy-efficient LED lighting at Keith Middle School in Orrville and Valley Grande Elementary School.

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery will receive $249,500 to install energy-efficient LED lighting at the Carolyn Blount Theatre and the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, also in Montgomery, will get $140,000 to install energy-efficient LED lighting upgrades.

“Those who invest in these energy upgrades are making wise and prudent decisions that will pay dividends well into the future,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in assisting these groups and organizations with reducing their costs.”
