A special agent with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) was reportedly forced to shoot a robbery suspect during a traffic stop in Montgomery on Thursday.Â
A statement from ALEA said that on Thursday morning the Montgomery Police Department (MPD) received a call about an armed robbery on Herron Street.
It was found that a victim was shot during the robbery and that the suspect took their car. The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment.Â
A law enforcement bulletin was issued for the stolen car. The special agent with ALEA's State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), who was working with the Metro Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Unit, managed to find the car on Upper Wetumpka Road and made a traffic stop.Â
The driver was identified as Raymond Tellis Jr., 19, of Montgomery.Â
As the agent attempted to make an arrest, Tellis reportedly pulled a gun from his waistband, leading to the agent shooting and killing him. No other officers were injured during the incident.Â
ALEA's statement said that agents not assigned to the Montgomery area were called in to conduct an officer-involved shooting investigation and that findings will be turned over to the Alabama Attorney General's Office.Â
