The Black Belt Community Foundation is bringing together partners and raising funds and support for Black Belt families that rely on SNAP benefits that are being cut in the federal government shutdown.
BBCF says 18,000 families in their 12-county service area rely on SNAP to feed their households and will not receive the funding in November as the government shutdown continues.
“We have applied for emergency support and are activating our network of faith-based partners, non-profit organizations, community associates, grantee organizations, volunteers and concerned citizens to ensure that food reaches families in need,” CEO Chris Spencer said in a statement on Wednesday.
BBCF is has launched the Food for Families in the Black Belt effort where funds will go directly toward purchasing and distributing food in the region.
BBCF also is compiling a county-by-county list of food banks, soup kitchens and food distribution sites. This resource will be available soon at:blackbeltfound.org/food-for-families.The organization recommends checking back often for updates and to share this information widely.
“Together, we can ensure that our neighbors do not go hungry during this challenging time,” Spencer said.
