The historic Ben Moore Hotel in Montgomery has received two grants from the National Park Service (NPS) for preservation efforts.
The hotel opened in 1951 by Montgomery businessman Matthew Franklin “Ben” Moore and was used by visitors who were subject to the segregation laws of that time.
It was home to the Majestic Café, the Malden Brothers Barbershop and the rooftop Afro Club. Civil rights leaders stayed there during the fight for voting rights and desegregation.
The grants from NPS totaled $800,000 through the Historic Preservation Fund’s African American Civil Rights program.
$750,000 will be used to support Phase I rehabilitation. $50,000 will be used to support a National Register nomination for the hotel and oral-history research.
