The Selma Rights Race Series will return to Selma in March with a 51-mile relay and bike race to raise funds for the River Region United Way and Edmundite Missions.
The Selma-to-Montgomery 51 Mile Relay and Bike Ride on March 19, 2022, is a 12-hour-long run and cycling challenge. The event will raise funds for the United Way and Edmundite Missions through donations and race proceeds, race organizer Raynard Lawler said.
Runners and cyclists will be able to experience the actual route taken by civil rights activists as they marched to the state capitol in 1965 so that African Americans could have the right to vote, according to Lawler.
The Selma to Montgomery race is part of the Civil Rights Race Series. The mission of the Civil Rights Race Series is to build stronger communities in each race location by partnering with agencies to benefit underserved residents, create unity among race participants and civil rights education for each race location, according to Lawler.
“If you haven’t participated in the Selma to Montgomery 51 Mile Relay and Bike Ride, we hope you will be inspired to lace up your sneakers or grab your bicycle to run or cycle the same route that so many traveled in church shoes and other hard bottoms” Lawler said.
