Stinging from back-to-back losses, the AISA Class AAA Region 2 Morgan Academy Senators rebounded with a happy homecoming shutout victory over non-regional opponent the Bessemer Academy Rebels 44-0 Friday night.
With the win, the Senators improved to 4-2 overall and remained 1-1 in region play. The AISA Class AAA Region 1 Bessemer Academy Rebels fell to 1-5 overall and remained 1-1 in region play.
Rhett Thomas rushed 145 yards on 11 carries, James Jones 100 yards on five carries, and Alex Johnson went seven of 10 passing.
The Senators took an early 6-0 lead in this contest on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Alex Johnson to Speedie Pernell at the 8:55 mark of the first quarter.
Morgan Academy wasted little time in adding to the score when James Jones rushed 62 yards for a touchdown. And Alex Johnson rushed for the 2-point play to make it a 14-0 lead still in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Thomas scored on a 3-yard run, and Alex Johnson hit Will Colquett with a 2-point pass to push the lead to 22-0 at the 9:01 mark.Â
Early in the third quarter, Thomas scored on a 20-yard touchdown run. And Alex Johnson hit Pernell on a 2-point pass play to make it a 30-0 contest.
Early in the fourth quarter William Ousley scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 36-0.
And the Senators closed out the scoring with a 2-yard run by Spur McIntyre and 2-point pass from Patrick Johnson to Wood Jones to make it a 44-0 final.Â
As a part of the homecoming activities, the Senators marked the 20th anniversary of the Morgan Academy 2005 State Championship Playoff team and 25th anniversary of the 2000 Morgan Academy State Championship Playoff teams.
The Senators have had 11 AISA State Football Championships including 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2005.
The 2025 Morgan Academy Homecoming Queen and her Court included Ninth Grade Maids Maggie Calame and Georgia Sams; 10th Grade Maids Analeigh Barnes and Madison Sansom; 11th Grade Maids Lilly Alsobrook and Anna Clay Fuller; 12th Grade Maids Kathryn Lyon and Brooke Waters; and the 2025 Homecoming Queen Libby Pearce.
The Senators will host non-regional opponent the Patrician Academy Saints on Oct. 3.Â
