Selma Saints take down Shelby County 48-13, remain undefeated

The Selma Saints football machine just keeps on rolling. Friday's game was filled with thrills, fancy footwork and a whole lot of laying of the hands.

The game against Shelby County at Memorial Stadium started out as a slow back and forth with both teams at zero for quite a while. Mike Hosea kicks it clean down the field. The NFL scouts had to see that! Wildcats had possession, but they're way back. Stopped at the 40 by the Saints.

Third and three. Still Wildcats’ possession. But wait. Their QB throws the ball seemingly directly to the Saints. Disruption! And Selma’s Cedrick Simmons is going, going, GONE! It's touchdown Selma! Pick Six – Simmons ran it down like grease lightning with a slew of Saints riding with him to the endzone! Selma's #15 Dwand Atkins brings in the two points. 8-0.

First down, Wildcats answer with a touchdown and the extra point. Now it is 8-7.

Second quarter. QB Kole Moody throws it in long. It's Mike Hosea planting himself perfectly in the end zone. Easy peezy caramel cheesy – double good. Touchdown Selma! 14-7.

Later in the second quarter, Jordan Glover makes a big catch. First down and 10. Easing on down the road and #0 Cairen Curtis runs in the touchdown, while Cedrick Simmons adds the two! 22-7.

It didn't take long, though. Shelby County bulldozed their way into a touchdown. 22-14. The monotony is broken because the Saints hollered back with a toss-up and it's #6 Blaine Scott for the touchdown with #2 Kaden "KP" Peoples for the conversion! 30-14. Shelby County returns and heads down the field. But wait. Child's play. KP reintroduces the merry-go-round. Almost like instant replay, around and around he took that Wildcat in slow-mo and fed him dirt! 

42 seconds left before the half. And there has not been a dull moment for a while now. The Saints seem to have decided there was no need to end the first half without a zinger. 

Go figure. The Wildcats must really love Cedrick Simmons because they threw the ball right to him again. Interception! Simmons took off and rode that track all the way to Broad Street and didn't stop until he reached city hall! Arrived with his teammates right there with him. Another Pick 6. Coast to coast, end zone to end zone — it’s touchdown Selma! 36-13. What a first half.

Back from the halftime show and the announcer barely gets "Welcome Back" out of his mouth and here we go again. Moody finds a receiver and does what Moody does - pass it. Contact made. It's Simmons again, nonstop into the zone. Touchdown Selma! Someone in the audience asked what the score was. Another person replied, "A lot to a little." Another jet-2-holiday, it didn't cost much at all. 42-13.

Wildcats take off but KP is not having it. Stopped real quick. But they still make it closer to the end zone later. First and goal and they run up the middle. Stopped by an army of Saints. Third down. Fourth and goal. Stopped. Selma defense was not having it. It's beginning to look like that last touchdown by the Wildcats just might be their last touchdown.

They are at fourth down. Behold. Interception! BJ Perkins snatched it right from under them and ran it in! Insert Pac Man sound. Touchdown Selma! This Pick 6 lands the Saints at 48-13. The announcer comes on. "If Coach (Charles) Moody wins this game tonight, it will be his 100^th win." 

Guess who won. Selma High Saints put the Shelby County Wildcats to sleep at 48-13, bringing their record to 5-0.

We captured a few thoughts of the players after the game. First up was Mr. "Three TD" Cedrick Simmons. "We worked all week. We planned for it and made it happen. Coach told me what to do and I believed in him. I saw it coming before it happened."

Blaine Scott also scored a touchdown. "I'm feeling good. We executed the plan Coach gave us. The team put in the work."

Kole Moody who is on a passing game that's being recognized in many arenas. He says, "Take what happens in life and leave it on the field." His brother, #7 Caeden Moody, said "I feel like we played pretty good. We can't get comfortable. Saints Nation, man."

Outside the stadium was #4 Bryan "BJ" Shears and - get this - #2 Kaden Peoples and #53 Kayden Peoples. Your eyes are just fine. "We shonuff fought as a team and stuck together. We stuck to the game plan," said BJ. Kaden Peoples (#2) reminded that "Just like Coach Moody said, we gotta remain humble and not become complacent. If we don't remain humble and we become complacent, we might play a good team and they might actually beat us." When asked who laid hands on the opponents tonight, #53 Kayden Peoples chimed in that "It was a lot going on tonight. I just put my hands on somebody."

Coach Moody who was acknowledged for accomplishing his 100^th win since coaching high school in 2011 made a few statements. After citing what the team has to continue to work on, he said to the fans, "A lot of people like to see the ball in the end zone. We do that a lot."

Selma (5-0) has a bye week next Friday, then returns on Oct. 9 to play Montevallo (1-4) on the road.
