The Science Department of Dallas County High School went “Green for Science” on March 17.
Students in sciences classes taught by Sara Day, Stacey Buchanan and Venecia Eaton worked in groups to complete science projects on topics of their choice. Students displayed completed projects in the cafeteria for DCHS parents, students, faculty and staff to view after community partners judged the projects. The DCHS Cafeteria also provided a healthy snack to enjoy while viewing the projects.
First, second and third place prizes were awarded. Winning first place for “What’s Popping” were Day’s physics students, JaMichael Goings, Kelsey Hale and Anthony Sullivan. Second place also went to Day’s physics students, Michael Allday, Steven McCullough and Ivan Rubio. Their project was titled “Teeth Breaking Down.” Third place was awarded to Buchanan’s students, Evan Franklin, Jamiya Peeples and Quincy Smith for their project “Which Apple Will Decay?”
Science Department Chair and Science Fair Coordinator Day said she felt that the Science Fair went great. “It was a great opportunity for students to explore science on their own and research something of their own interest,” Day said. “We look forward to making this a yearly event because all students enjoyed working on the projects.”
She also expressed her gratitude for the judges and for those that donated prizes. Mark Woodson donated Kentucky Fried Chicken gift certificates as well as an anonymous donor donated gift cards to Sonics and Taco Bell in addition to gift bags. Winners were also awarded homework passes.
Dallas County High School students will be on Spring Break March 21 – March 25.
