The Demopolis City Council voted to pay for tearing down three abandoned buildings near Winfield Regional Hospital for future development.
The council voted at their Nov. 5 meeting to pay up to $75,000 to Stewart Construction Co. to take down the former Hollifield Clinic and two houses east of the hospital.
The council also voted to share the cost of an engineering study for a collapsed sidewalk on Strawberry Street with the property owner, Dr. Brittany Anderson. Some of the sidewalk is owned by the property owner, and part is owned by the city, according to Demopolis Mayor Woody Collins.
Collins said the city and Anderson will share the cost of the $7,200 study based on the percentage of the sidewalk each party owns. The city’s portion is $5,400.
The council said they will vote on changes to the city’s building codes at the next meeting.
