The city of Detroit last week unveiled a new monument installed in a neighborhood park in honor of a civil rights activist who died in an attack in Selma in 1965 while in town to help register Blacks to vote.

The Detroit News reports the new monument featuring Viola Liuzzo was installed on Thursday at a playground in a west side neighborhood named after the mother of five who drove from Detroit to Selma to participate in the Civil Rights Movement with Southern Christian Leadership Conference but was killed by the KKK.

The monument also features Liuzzo's best friend who helped raise Liuzzo's children after her death, Sarah Evans.
