Edmundite Missions has announced that demolition has begun on buildings at the corner of LL Anderson Avenue and Broad Street in Selma to make way for a new administrative office.
“This is truly an exciting day for the Missions and a great way to kick off our 85th year in Selma.” said Edmundite President and CEO Chad McEachern in a press release. “While it is bittersweet to see buildings that have been part of the Missions for so many years come down, it is the legacy of the Missions to continue to evolve to best serve the community.”
The buildings had once been living spaces for clergy before being used for groups traveling to Selma for volunteer services. More recently they had housed the HealthLink and Doc-on-the-Spot before being moved.
In the press release Edmundite Missions stated that the Memorial Chapel will not be demolished and that the construction will be connected to the chapel.
The new office will let the temporary administrative offices on Minter Avenue go back to educational programs for the center. Construction is being done by Steward Construction Company.
“The Missions knows how important it is to continue to grow and to be visible to the community. I want the community to see new buildings and investment right here in the heart of the city," McEachern says in the release.
"Whether it’s the Bullock Center, which is nearing 1,500 registered members, this new administrative office, or the other buildings we have planned in upcoming phases of our strategic plan, it’s important that the Missions stay connected to the community through our physical footprint.”
The timeline for completion is estimated to be six to nine months depending on weather.
“It will be here before we know it.” McEachern said. “We’ve saved bricks from the old structure for a legacy wall that will be featured in the new office. With that and being physically connected to St. Edmund’s Memorial Chapel, I believe this space will be the perfect combination of our rich Catholic heritage and our exciting path forward in service.”
