The town of Fort Deposit was awarded a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Housing Urban Development (HUD) for a lead reduction and education program.

According to the Lowndes Signal, the money will be used for the Lead Hazard Reduction Capacity Building Grant Program in an effort to educate the public about the risks of lead exposure and how to address it.

Awareness will be spread via implementing educational programming in community events, social media and canvassing. The program will also increase lead blood testing in children.

The initiative is not limited to Lowndes County and Fort Deposit. The town will partner with Sumter, Wilcox, Marengo and Barbour counties and Black Belt Community Foundation for a wider effort.
