Four Dallas County inmates escaped from the Perry County Correctional Facility in Uniontown early Saturday morning, and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a search to find them.
According to Cam Ward, director of the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles, the escape happened around 1:30 a.m. Ward said the four men were being housed in two dorms that Dallas County leases inside the Perry County facility because Dallas County’s jail is still under repair from the Jan. 12, 2023 tornado.
Perry County Sheriff Roy Fikes reported that the escapees are Marquavious Billingsley, Jaden Christopher Maxwell, Johnny Dave Harris Bush Jr. and Kevin Gunn.
Fikes said the safety of residents remains his top concern as deputies and assisting agencies work to locate the men. “They are actively engaged in efforts to locate and apprehend the escapees,” he said, adding that an investigation into how the inmates got away is underway.
The four men face a range of charges that include breaking and entering vehicles, first degree escape, assault first degree promoting prison contraband first degree robbery and murder.
Fikes urged anyone who sees the escapees or knows where they may be to call 911. “Please do not attempt to approach or apprehend them,” he said.
Ward said the inmates were not under the custody of Pardons and Paroles and were not parole or probation violators. “They were strictly Dallas County inmates being supervised by Dallas County deputies inside the leased space.”
Ward said there was a staged incident inside the back of the dorm to create a distraction.
“There was some sort of a staged incident in the back of their cell. And when the officer, the Dallas County deputies went in, from what I understand, that is when they used the opportunity to go out the door.”
Ward added that Dallas County authorities are leading the investigation and search effort. Ward encouraged anyone with information to contact the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department immediately.
