In a commemoration of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 the “Honk 4 Voting Rights Caravan” will take place at the Dallas County Courthouse this Thursday, on Aug. 6 at 4 p.m.

The caravan is the result of a partnership of community and faith organizations with Drew Glover, who is the new Principal Coordinator of the Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee. The event will cover the subjects of voting, voting rights and registration.

“We must make sure we are informed about policy, the law, and changes to voting rights to overcome any obstacles that are designed to block our participation or disenfranchised people and their right to vote,” says the event’s Facebook page.

In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law by then-president Lyndon B. Johnson, a year after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation. This same year saw the events of Bloody Sunday in which dozens of voting rights marchers were injured in a violent confrontation with state troopers.

The Dallas County Courthouse is located at 105 Lauderdale St. in Selma.
