Miah Jackson, who lost the mayoral election to James Perkins Jr. in Tuesday's runoff election, posted a letter to "Citizens of Selma" on Facebook addressing how she hopes Selma will move forward.
Here is the letter:
"To God be the glory for the outcome of this election! The people has chosen the leaders for this season and it is our duty, as citizens of our beautiful community to honor God’s choice, coalesce around their mission and leadership, and press forward for a better Selma. I have called Mayor-elect Perkins to congratulate him on being elected as mayor of our beloved City, and to express my support for his administration and the council’s leadership.
It is an awesome responsibility to be in the mayor’s seat, which Mayor-elect Perkins well knows, and I honor his willingness to serve and sacrifice for Selma again in this capacity. He will have a largely new Council not burdened by the problems and ineffectiveness of the past, and a new opportunity to move us forward. Selma has proven to be a City of loving, forgiving people, itself fraught with mistakes and regrets of the past, and has again chosen and embraced grace and hope. I commend Mayor-elect Perkins on his perseverance and endurance for the many years of his campaigning toward this end. He and the new municipal leadership team have my full support.
It has been my honor to serve Selma as Councilwoman for Ward 3 and to have helped shape the course of our City during my four-year tenure. I hope that my efforts to bring our financial practices into alignment with State law and municipal ordinances will continue with our new leadership. It is critical that the City adopt written policy and procedures and eliminate the repeated negative findings on our financial audits.
Mayor-elect Perkins, I will be a champion for your worthy pursuits and praying for your and the Council’s success.
When Selma wins, we all win!"
