Local agencies receive $115K in grants in first ceremony since COVID pandemic

Leaders heading up programs that received grants from RC&D.

The ALA-TOM Resource Conservation & Development Council, which is funded by the Alabama State Legislature, awarded about $115,000 in grants to programs around the Black Belt.

The ceremony, held April 4 at Trustmark Bank in Selma, was the first one since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Noopie Cosby of The Cosby Company, a governmental and public affairs company, said the grants are community grants for different projects throughout Selma and Dallas County. Other grants will be announced for Perry, Clark and Wilcox counties, according to Cosby.

Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr., Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, Sen. Malika Sanders-Fortier and Rep. Prince Chestnut spoke at the ceremony.

Here is a list of some of the grants given out at the April 4 ceremony:

*Project Continue the Legacy - To continue feeding residents of Minter, one of the most economically depressed towns in the Dallas County and state. FY-21 $3,303.19

*Five Points Community Food Pantry/Education Projects - The Five Points Community Project are our Food Pantry Project and after -school tutorial project that provides food for low-income families and K-12 students that live in the Five Points area of Orrville. FY-21 $3,303.19

*Black Belt Health Improvement Project - Our Health Improvement Project provides intervention, prevention and management services, and support for participants/public citizens that have diabetes. FY-20 $3,000.

*Architectural Plans for Create Workspace for Artist Studios – ArtsRevive, Gallery 905 was established to provide gallery space for artists to display and sell their works. FY-20 $3,451.87

*Black Belt Mobile Pantries - A service provided to the communities by partnering with our local agencies (nonprofit/501c3/charity/religious organization) to distribute food to the community. FY-20 $3,000.

*Arsenal Community Development Center - The Arsenal Place Community Development Center will offer workforce development and social justice programs and allow for participants and local residents an opportunity to acquire the vocational skills necessary to find and maintain employment. FY-21 $5,000.

*Child Abuse Prevention Training & Mandatory Reporter Training - The Child Advocacy Center staff conducts Mandatory Reporter Training and Child Abuse Prevention training and events throughout the year to service children whom need interviewing for legal cases. FY-20 $4,452.09

*After school Enrichment Program - Selma Police Athletic League (Selma PAL) has implemented an established youth mentoring program, summer enrichment program, and an after-school enrichment program for area children to come and participate. FY-20/21 $10,163.59

*COVID 19 Recovery Technology - Upgraded software and computers for virtual meetings and conferences that will be used for communications during the pandemic. FY-21 $3,451.

*Macedonia Community Educational/Food Project - To assist low-income persons and families with food and educational services to enhance our community at large and provide our students with a foundation to become the best they can be. FY-21 $5,000.

*Pine Glen Mailbox Replacement (Community Development)- Replaced the old mailboxes with new ones at Pine Glen. FY-20 $5,000.

*Sturdivant Hall Museum, Selma - Teach and promote tourism about the history of this Greek Revival, Neo-Classic Antebellum mansion using new printed brochures. FY-20 $3,000.

*Forklift Project, Son Light Center Inc. - Forklift was purchased to load and unload food trucks delivering and distributing food to needed families. FY-21 $7,500.

*Youth Leadership Selma-Dallas County - This program is a 10-month leadership and community development program. The program consists of 30 youth. Day long sessions consist of educational presentation, dialogues, simulations and tours of local business/industries. FY 20/21 $8,000.

*Senior RX Program (Area Wide – 9 counties) - To help the increasing numbers of seniors and disabled clients receiving prescription drug assistance. FY 20/21 $18,000.
