The Selma Housing Authority (SHA) and Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF) will hold the lottery to give away a free house announced earlier in April to a family who was affected by the January 2023 tornado.Â
The house located on 1426 Washington Street was constructed by the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA). It features 1,450 square feet and features nine foot ceilings, an energy efficient heat pump, appliances, and is valued at $169,000.Â
"Our collaboration with the [BBCF] is a cornerstone in our community revitalization efforts," said SHA CEO Randolph Kennard. "Offering this 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom in a lottery to a tornado-affected family highlights our dedication to providing tangible support and rebuilding lives."Â
"Partnering with [SHA], City of Selma and NACA to provide a new home to victims of the January 12, 2023 exemplifies our commitment to rebuilding and revitalizing communities in the Black Belt region, starting here in Selma," said BBCF President Felicia Lucky. "We believe that safe, affordable and energy-efficient housing is a fundamental right."Â
The lottery will take place at the house's location at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 21.Â
