The Lowndes County Schools district will close three of its seven campuses, citing the costs to operate them amid declining enrollment.

According to WSFA, Lowndes Middle School, Hayneville Middle School and Jackson-Steele Elementary School are set to close.

The number of students have reportedly dropped from close to 3,000 to 1,007, which has put a financial strain on the district.

Displaced students and teachers will be moved to the currently operating schools.
