A man is facing an assault charge after he allegedly attacked and injured an off-duty police officer during an incident at a Walmart in Montgomery.

According to WSFA, the suspect was identified as Donovan Keontae Caldwell, of Prattville, 20. He reportedly entered the location with a backpack and was later exiting when he was stopped by the officer, who suspected him of shoplifting.

Caldwell then allegedly struck the officer multiple times in the face. He was restrained by bystanders until other police officers arrived in response.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital to be treated for abrasions to the face, arms and legs.

Caldwell was placed at the Montgomery County Detention Facility under a $7,500 bond.
