In a feisty feline Friday fight, the Demopolis High School Tigers kept the Shelby County Wildcats out of the endzone in final seconds of the game to hold on to a 29-27 lead on Oct. 3.Â
Shelby County built an impressive touchdown drive and held back Demopolis in the first quarter. The Tigers scored two touchdowns in the second quarter (but missed an extra point kick). The scoreboard showed Demopolis 13 and Shelby County 7 at the end of the first half.Â
The Tigers added another touchdown and made a 2-point conversion halfway through the third quarter. The Wildcats made a touchdown as well, putting game at 21-14 going into the fourth quarter.
And what a quarter it was. Shelby County scored a touchdown with a little over nine minutes in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 21. Demopolis Quarterback JW McAlpine scored on a quarterback keeper a minute later, and the Tigers made the 2-point conversion.Â
Demopolis forced the Wildcats to turn the ball over on downs on the Demopolis 3 yard line with seven minutes left in the game. The Wildcats returned for a score but were unable to make the 2-point conversion. The game ended with a score of 29-27.Â
McAlpine was behind center the entire game. Jamarcus Davis and Fred Aldridge had a good night on offense, and the Demopolis defense rose to the occasion when the Wildcats were scratching on their door in the fourth quarter. Several penalties were costly to the Tigers’ cause, specifically offsides calls.
This was a conference game. It was the Tigers’ eighth straight win against the Wildcats.
The Tigers carry a 4-2 record to Sipsey Valley next Friday. The Wildcats are 3-4 for the year.Â
